Mermaid
Digital Painting/Photomontage & Mixed-Media
2001 and 2004

I created the first version of this in December, 2001, as a gift for my sister. It was one of a series of ten, each one slightly different. I gave most of them away as gifts. I created the second version, somewhat modified, in December of 2004, and it was in a group art show in Seattle in spring of 2005. Of the first set, one was on display in the Mimic-Octopus CAST show in 2002. It sold the night they hung the show. I will never forget that... I was so thrilled! I included another one of that set in my solo art show at the P&G Speakeasy Cafe in February and March of 2004, and that one sold, too. It seems to be one of the more popular pieces I've done.

This piece was originally created for my sister Kristin because it was inspired by stories she used to tell me when I was a kid... I loved them; stories of enchanted deer that were actually princes... princesses disguised as peasants, who were escaping from evil usurpers... wolves, unicorns, winged people, mysterious castles... and of course, mermaids. She used to draw wonderful pictures for me, too. So this piece was inspired by that.
