Abalone Queen
Faces for Life Mask

Acrylic Paint, Yarn, Wire, Fabric, Plaster Bandage, etc.
June 2003

The ocean is the lifeblood of our planet. Its beautiful and terrible mysteries have always fascinated me. It encompasses life, death, and eternal change, as expressed in these lines from The Tempest:

Full fathom five thy father lies:
Of his bones are coral made:
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Hark! now I hear them--ding-dong, bell.

The ceramic base for this mask was sculpted by Alison Moore for Faces for Life. I used acrylic paint, fabric, yarn, wire, duct tape, plaster bandage, and other materials to transform it into a mermaid.

This mask was on display with all the Faces for Life masks at the Bellevue Square Mall, and was auctioned off to raise funds for the Puget Sound Blood Center.
